I bought this as a gift for my grandmother who had a tendency of letting the tea pot burn on the stove (getting very dangerous) so I thought this would be perfect for her. She can now get perfect steaming water, in seconds, whenever she needs it and not fuss with the hot teakettle or worry about letting it stay on too long with the great auto shut off function.
I noticed that some other reviews mention a scale problem, she's had this (in very heavy use) for almost a year now and there have been no problems-and the entire family is very picky tea drinkers. Perhaps people are not cleaning it? Although, we only use filtered water so maybe not getting the build up that others are experiencing either (using unfiltered water without diligent cleaning will clog my own expensive espresso machine at home-I would tend to blame water that has too many minerals rather than the unit itself-ie. unfiltered tap or especially spring water can create build up in these types of machines, but I'd be interested to know if any of these people found a different unit that does not react the same way to the water they are using).
It has been a breeze for my 92yr old grandmother to use. In fact, she loves it so much I think she's now finding excuses to use it! She makes all kinds of soups, hot chocolates, and tea with it. Even my sister and aunt when they go over keep it running all the time. It was the gift everyone was talking about for months afterward (and others have since bought themselves one)! Perfect gift!
